LUMOS DOMINATE Action Camera Review: What Travellers Should Know Before Buying This Affordable Action Camera

Share post:

If you’ve been looking for an affordable action camera for your next holiday, road trip or outdoor adventure, you’ve probably already discovered that the price can climb pretty quickly once you start looking at the better-known options. And that’s exactly why the LUMOS DOMINATE Action Camera caught my attention.

Priced from RM499, the DOMINATE promises a lot for its price: 5K video, 4K at 60FPS, 48MP photos, EIS stabilisation, dual screens, a waterproof case and a generous collection of accessories.

On paper, it sounds almost too good for the price.

But specifications only tell you part of the story.

If you’re considering buying an action camera, the more important questions are: Is it easy to use? What actually comes in the box? Is it practical for travelling? Do you need to spend more on accessories? And is it worth choosing over a more expensive action camera?

I’ve been getting familiar with the LUMOS DOMINATE, and there are quite a few things I genuinely like about it, along with a few things I wish LUMOS had included. So, let’s get into the details.

LUMOS DOMINATE Action Camera at a Glance

Before getting into my experience, here’s what you need to know about the camera.

Key Features:

  • 5K Ultra HD video
  • 4K video at 60FPS
  • 48MP photos
  • Built-in EIS stabilisation
  • Dual front and rear screens
  • 170° wide-angle lens
  • Vertical 9:16 shooting
  • Slow-motion, loop recording and time-lapse modes
  • Waterproof case included
  • USB-C charging
  • Wi-Fi connectivity
  • 32GB memory card included
  • Multiple mounting accessories
  • Rechargeable batteries
  • Hard carrying case

The camera is aimed at first-time action camera buyers, travellers and anyone looking for good features without paying premium action-camera prices. And honestly, I think that’s the right audience for it.

What Makes the LUMOS DOMINATE an Affordable Action Camera?

What Makes the LUMOS DOMINATE an Affordable Action Camera

The biggest selling point is fairly obvious: you get a lot of camera for RM499. LUMOS DOMINATE offers 5K video and 4K 60FPS, specifications that sound much more expensive than the camera’s price suggests.

But I don’t think you should look at this camera simply as “a cheap alternative” to premium action cameras. It’s better understood as an accessible and affordable action camera for everyday adventures.

Think that,

  • Holiday videos
  • Road trips
  • Beach days
  • Family activities
  • Walking tours
  • Cycling
  • Travel vlogging
  • Social media content
  • POV footage
  • Everyday outdoor filming

If you want an action camera without immediately committing to a four-figure budget, that’s where the DOMINATE becomes interesting.

5K Video and 4K 60FPS: What Can You Actually Do With It?

Let’s start with the feature that’s likely to catch everyone’s attention.

5K Ultra HD

The LUMOS DOMINATE can record up to 5K at 30FPS.
Having the extra resolution can be useful when you want sharper footage or some flexibility when cropping your footage during editing. However, I wouldn’t recommend choosing a camera purely because it says “5K” on the box. For everyday travel footage, 4K at 60FPS may actually be the setting you’ll find yourself using more often.

4K at 60FPS

If you’re recording movement, 60FPS is particularly useful.
Walking through a busy market, filming from a moving vehicle, recording outdoor activities or capturing someone running around gives you plenty of movement to deal with.

The higher frame rate helps those clips look smoother.

And if you’re creating content for Instagram, YouTube Shorts or other short-form platforms, having high-quality footage gives you more flexibility when editing.

EIS Stabilisation: A Feature Travellers Will Appreciate

One thing I always look for in an action camera is stabilisation. Because let’s be realistic – I’m rarely going to hold an action camera perfectly still while travelling or on the move. The LUMOS DOMINATE comes with Electronic Image Stabilisation (EIS), which is designed to reduce the shakiness caused by movement.

Why Does Stabilisation Matter?

Imagine filming while:

  • jumping into the swimming pool
  • Walking around a new city
  • Hiking on a trail
  • Riding in a vehicle
  • Cycling
  • Exploring an attraction
  • Following someone during an activity
  • Visiting a waterpark and want to make a vlog (which I’m planning very soon)

Without stabilisation, handheld footage can quickly become unpleasant to watch. EIS helps make those moving shots smoother and more usable. For an affordable action camera, I think having built-in EIS is one of the more meaningful features rather than simply being another impressive number on the specification sheet.

Dual Screens Make Self-Filming Easier

Another feature I really like is the dual-screen design. There’s a screen on the front as well as the back, which is particularly useful if you’re filming yourself.

Why Is a Front Screen Useful?

Absolutely! Who wouldn’t appreciate a selfie option? If you’re travelling and want to capture yourself in the frame, you can see how you’re positioned without constantly guessing whether you’re actually in shot.

This is especially useful for:

  • Travel vlogs
  • Selfies
  • Reels
  • Walking videos
  • Talking-to-camera clips
  • Group shots

The DOMINATE also supports vertical 9:16 shooting, which makes sense for anyone creating content primarily for social media.

The Accessories: One of My Favourite Things About LUMOS DOMINATE

The Accessories: One of My Favourite Things About LUMOS DOMINATE

Here’s where I think the LUMOS DOMINATE becomes particularly appealing. You’re not just getting a camera.

You’re getting an entire little action-camera setup.

What Comes in the Bundle?

  • Hard carrying case
  • Selfie stick/extension pole
  • Rechargeable batteries
  • Dual-battery charging dock
  • Flexible mini tripod
  • Wireless remote
  • USB-C cable
  • Mounting screws
  • Quick-release buckle
  • Bike mount
  • Straps
  • Tripod adapter
  • Waterproof case joint mount
  • Flat mounts
  • Adhesive pads

That’s quite a collection.

And I particularly appreciate this because action cameras are only as versatile as the ways you can mount them. You might want to use it handheld today, attach it somewhere tomorrow, and put it on a tripod the next day. Having all those mounting options already included means you can experiment without immediately going down the rabbit hole of buying accessories.

Three Batteries? Yes, Please.

This is probably one of my favourite things about the LUMOS DOMINATE bundle.

You Get Three Batteries in Total

For travelling, this is a big advantage. There is nothing more annoying than getting somewhere beautiful, pulling out your camera and discovering that your battery is nearly dead. With three batteries, you have considerably more flexibility.

You can have one in the camera, another ready to go and another charging.

The camera also uses USB-C charging, which is another small but useful travel-friendly feature. One cable can potentially handle several of your devices, rather than having to pack another strange little charging cable that disappears into the depths of your luggage.

The Waterproof Case Looks Really Well Made

Another feature I appreciate is the waterproof case. The case feels solid and well made, and it’s included rather than being something you have to purchase separately.

Swimming, Snorkelling and Rainy Days!

According to LUMOS, the waterproof housing is designed for activities such as swimming and snorkelling, as well as protection during rainy conditions. I haven’t personally taken mine underwater yet (I’m planning to), so I’m not going to pretend I’ve tested its underwater performance.

But having the case included is still a big plus.

For a traveller, it means you already have the option to take the camera into situations where you wouldn’t want to expose the camera itself to water.

And Then There’s the Carrying Case

I didn’t expect the hard carrying case to be something I’d appreciate as much as I do.

But I love it.

Everything Has a Place with LUMOS DOMINATE Bundle

With an action camera, the camera itself is only one part of the equation. You’ve got batteries, mounts, cables, the waterproof housing, tripod accessories, and other little pieces. Without a proper case, those things can quickly become a chaotic pile at the bottom of your bag. The carrying case keeps everything together and makes the DOMINATE much more travel-friendly. For me, that’s a genuine advantage.

What I Wish the LUMOS DOMINATE Included

Of course, no product is perfect. There are a few things I’d change if I could redesign the bundle.

1. Early batch launch didn’t include a Paper User Manual

The camera doesn’t come with a traditional paper user manual. There is a digital manual available, so you aren’t left without instructions. Still, personally, I am old-school. I wish there was a small physical guide included.

When you’re opening a new action camera with several buttons, shooting modes, and a pile of accessories, having something you can quickly flip through without reaching for your phone would be convenient. It’s a small thing, but I think it would improve the first-time setup experience.

Update: My unit was from an early launch batch. When contacted, LUMOS confirmed that subsequent batches will include a hardcopy manual.

2. I Wish the Selfie Stick Had an Attached Remote

The bundle does include a wireless remote, which is useful.

But here’s what I would have loved: A remote button built directly into the selfie stick. That would make self-filming even easier. You could extend the stick, frame yourself, and start or stop recording without having to separately hold or manage the remote. It’s not a dealbreaker at all, but it’s definitely on my “this would have been nice” list.

3. A Tripod that stands Would Have Been Nice Too

The flexible selfie-style tripod is useful, particularly when you’re travelling and want something compact.

But I would have loved a standing tripod option in the bundle. Sometimes you want the camera positioned higher up or at a different angle, and having to switch setups can be inconvenient. A taller standable tripod would have made an already versatile bundle even more flexible.

Who Is the LUMOS DOMINATE Action Camera For?

I think the DOMINATE makes the most sense for a few specific types of buyers.

✈️ Travellers

If you’re looking for a compact camera to take on holidays, the combination of multiple batteries, a waterproof case, carrying case and mounting accessories is very appealing.

🎥 First-Time Action Camera Buyers

If you’ve never owned an action camera before, spending RM1,000+ straight away may feel like a big commitment.

The DOMINATE gives you a way to explore action-camera photography and video without making that kind of investment.

📱 Content Creators on a Budget

The dual screens, vertical shooting, 4K 60FPS, and EIS make it suitable for creators who want another camera for Reels, Shorts, travel content, and B-roll.

🚴 Outdoor Enthusiasts

The different mounting options make it much more adaptable than simply using a phone.

Who Should Probably Look Elsewhere?

The DOMINATE isn’t trying to replace a professional camera system.

If you’re a professional filmmaker or someone who needs the most advanced image processing, premium stabilisation and a sophisticated professional ecosystem, you’ll probably want to look at higher-end options.

But that’s not really the point of the DOMINATE.

It’s about getting a capable action camera without spending a fortune.

LUMOS DOMINATE Action Camera: Pros & Cons

What I Love:

  • 5K video
  • 4K at 60FPS
  • 48MP photos
  • Built-in EIS
  • Dual screens
  • Vertical shooting
  • Waterproof case included
  • Three batteries
  • Dual-battery charging dock
  • Lots of mounting accessories
  • Hard carrying case
  • USB-C charging
  • 32GB memory card included
  • Affordable starting price

What I’d Change:

  • The unit I have is from their early batch launch, but I wish I had a paper user manual too. But it’s good that future buyers will get that.
  • An integrated remote button on the selfie stick would be more convenient
  • A standing tripod would have made the bundle even more versatile
  • I haven’t personally tested the waterproof case underwater yet

Final Verdict: Is the LUMOS DOMINATE the Best Affordable Action Camera?

Final Verdict: Is the LUMOS DOMINATE the Best Affordable Action Camera?

So, after looking at the features, accessories, and overall package, is the LUMOS DOMINATE the best affordable action camera?

I wouldn’t say there’s one action camera that’s automatically the best for everyone. But if your priority is getting as much functionality and equipment as possible without spending a huge amount, the LUMOS DOMINATE makes a very convincing case. At RM499, this action cam gives first-time action camera buyers access to features such as 5K recording, 4K 60FPS, 48MP photos, EIS, dual screens and a wide-angle lens. And for me, it’s the things beyond the camera that make the package particularly interesting.

  • Three batteries.
  • A waterproof case.
  • A hard carrying case.
  • A whole collection of mounting accessories.

These are the things that make me look at the DOMINATE as a travel camera rather than simply another gadget. Because when you’re travelling, you don’t want to spend your holiday worrying about whether you brought the right mount, whether you have enough batteries, or where you put that tiny adapter. You want to grab the case and go. And that’s where I think the LUMOS DOMINATE Action Camera gets a lot right.

If you’re shopping for an affordable action camera in Malaysia, the DOMINATE is definitely one I’d put on the list, particularly if you want a camera that comes with most of the accessories you’ll need right from the start.

LUMOS DOMINATE Action Camera Price in Malaysia
